Adaptive behavior of Scotocryptus melitophilus Reitter (Coleoptera, Leiodidae) to live with its host Melipona quadrifasciata Lepeletier (Hymenoptera, Apidae) Zoologia

Forty six beetles Scotocryptus melitophilus Reitter, 1881 collected in a nest of Melipona quadrifasciata Lepeletier, 1836 were studied. All beetles were put together in a large petri dish with 14 males, 14 virgin queens and 14 workers of M. quadrifasciata, which was not aggressive towards the S. melitophilus and flew with 3 to 10 beetles attached to them. When groups of 20 workers, 20 males and 20 virgin queens were put separately in three petri dishes, the workers become attractive to beetles after they were seven days old, while the males after the 19 days old. Only one virgin queen five days old attracted one beetle. The anatomic parts of the workers bees more attractive to the beetles when smeared to a filter paper were the head (32%), abdomen (29%)...

Does predator benefits prey? Commensalism between Corynoneura Winnertz (Diptera, Chironomidae) and Corydalus Latreille (Megaloptera, Corydalidae) in Southeastern Brazil Zoologia

Commensalism between Corydalus Latreille, 1802 (Megaloptera, Corydalidae) and Corynoneura Winnertz, 1846 (Diptera, Chironomidae, Orthocladiinae) larvae was recorded in Indaiá stream, at 1,380 m a.s.l. (Parque Nacional da Serra do Cipó, 19º-20ºS, 43º-44ºW) and in the headwaters of São Francisco river, at 1,300-1,700 m a.s.l. (Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra, 20º00'-20º30'S, 46º15'-47º00'W), in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Seventy eight Corydalus larvae (range 22-88 mm) were sampled: 61 in the Indaiá stream and 17 in other two streams. First come, first serve: " sit and wait" behavior in dung beetles at the source of primate dung Neotropical Entomology

Dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) compete intensively for dung resources, and most species forage in the understory. Here, we describe the unique behavior of one dung beetle species, Canthon aff. quadriguttatus (Olivier), associated with two species of monkeys from Peru. We observed this beetle species on the genital and anal regions of the brown titi monkey, Callicebus brunneus (Wagner), and subsequently falling with dung as the monkeys defecated. The same association was also observed with the bald-faced saki monkey, Pithecia irrorata irrorata (Gray). Using the " sit and wait" at the source behavior, C. quadriguttus may arrive first at the dung resource, possibly out-competing other dung beetle species. This paper is the first report...

Fusarium spp. agentes causales de la malformación vegetativa y floral del mango (Mangifera indica L.) y su transmisión por Frankliniella spp. y Scirtothrips spp. Colegio de Postgraduados

De huertas comerciales de mango de Guerrero y Michoacán, México, se colectaron trips por muestreo aleatorio de árboles para identificación de especies, determinar su relación forética con Fusarium spp., transmisión de estos hongos, agentes causales de malformación vegetativa y floral de mango, y fundación de colonias de trips en condiciones asépticas en cámaras bioclimáticas. Se obtuvieron ejemplares de trips pertenecientes a dos géneros y 11 especies, siete pertenecientes a Scirtothrips y cuatro a Frankliniella. Differences in the phoresy of the mites Macrocheles muscaedomesticae (Scopoli, 1972) (Macrochelidae) and Uroseius sp. (Polyaspidae) on the house fly, Musca domestica (Linnaeus, 1758) and the similarities in their phoretic dispersal and parasitism are discussed, altogether with the effects on predator-prey interactions. The prevalence and intensity of phoresy in the mite species were significantly related to the attachment site on the hosts. The phoresy of Uroseius sp. was correlated with temperature but not with rainfall and relative humidity. El ácaro Raoiella indica Hirst es una especie fitófaga obligada que en pocos años ha colonizado amplias zonas de América Tropical y ha causado severos daños, sobre todo a plantas de las familias Arecaceae y Musaceae. El presente trabajo estuvo dirigido a evaluar atributos biológicos de esta especie que permitan explicar su potencial como plaga invasiva. Se estudiaron su capacidad para sobrevivir en ausencia de alimento y sus mecanismos de dispersión, incluyendo el desplazamiento pasivo en el viento y la posible asociación forética sobre insectos. En el presente trabajo se documentaron y describieron los diferentes aspectos de la taxonomía, biología y ecología de los ácaros asociados a escolitinos de importancia forestal en nuestro país. El objetivo principal fue el de conocer su diversidad, abundancia, distribución, estructura poblacional, así como conocer diferentes aspectos de las relaciones que presentan con otros microorganismos en el mismo microecosistema. Para ello se realizaron muestreos desde 2008 hasta el 2012, en los cuales se tomaron muestras de corteza y raíces con signos de daño por los descortezadores.
